Netflix has landed another impressive series for their growing library of exclusive content, which began with the David Fincher-produced "House of Cards" and will continue in April with the return of "Arrested Development". With drama and comedy taken care of, this time they are turning to sci-fi with Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix, Cloud Atlas) and J. Michael Straczynski ("Babylon 5", Thor) on "Sense8", a 10 episode miniseries expected to premiere in 2014.

The show is described as centering on a group of people around the world who are suddenly linked mentally, and must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world’s order.

The series will be in collaboration with Georgeville Television whose producer, Marc Rosen, previously described the project as "an idea so big in size and scale that it doesn't make sense to try it as a pilot. The only way to let the filmmakers realize their vision on something like this is to do multiple episodes."

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos was quoted in a press release saying, "Andy and Lana Wachowski and Joe Straczynski are among the most imaginative writers and gifted visual storytellers of our time. Their incredible creations are favorites of Netflix members globally and we can't wait to bring Sense8 to life."

The Wachowski siblings were also quoted, talking about the genesis of the project saying, "Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox 'Sense8' was born."

There is no word yet on whether the Wachowskis and Stracyznski will be writing the entire series themselves and/or how many episodes the Wachowskis will direct, though it was previously thought they would direct at least a couple, similar to how Fincher directed the first two episodes of "House of Cards".

The thing about working with the Wachowskis that you always have to remember when you walk in the room is that they have these 12-story-tall brains, and what starts off as a story idea quickly spirals into discussions of quantum mechanics, free will, Heidegger, Kant, and suddenly you’re really in the tall grass trying to keep up. Working with the Wachowskis always keeps me on my toes because the last thing I want is to come off as an idiot in front of them by putting Descartes before the horse.

So what if a more literal form of empathy could be triggered in eight individuals around the planet, in India, the U.S., London, Mumbai, Nairobi and elsewhere, who suddenly became mentally aware of each other, able to communicate as directly as if they were in the same room. How would they react? What would they do? To what degree could they accept each other? What does it mean? And what would the world think about people with this ability? Would they embrace it, or hunt them down as threats to our own evolution? How would they survive? It would give us a perfect platform to do a show that was loaded with action, big ideas, some amazing stunts that no one’s done before, and play to a planetary audience.

“We had to work around their shooting schedule on Jupiter Ascending, so we variously met in Chicago, Berlin and London, any place and time they had a break,” Straczynski said. “And now we’re deep into the writing process with shooting slated to begin early next summer.

“We plan to block shoot this as a 10-hour movie, and the best part is that we’re going to be shooting in the very same locations we describe, meaning we don’t fake Mumbai, we go to Mumbai, we go to Nairobi, we go to London,” he revealed. “The plan is to shoot as much as we can on stages in Chicago, then the Wachowskis, I and two or three other directors will blitz out and shoot simultaneously in seven different countries, taking along the appropriate cast.”
